World health problems caused by drug-resistant bacteria are increasing. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a major pathogen causing hospital and community acquired infections. MRSA infections are more difficult to treat due to the antibiotic-resistance of the bacteria. GM-1 and GM-3, major xanthones from mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) exhibited antibacterial activity against MRSA comparable to a standard drug vancomycin. Mangosteen xanthone cream can effectively treat skin infection as compared with commercial antibiotics. In addition, these xanthones inhibited the growth of Enterococcus sp.
